La principale leçon à en tirer est que notre volonté doit se gérer et se préserver comme une ressource rare. Nous en avons un stock limité, qui s'émousse au fil de la journée, et plus particulièrement dans des phases d'hypoglycémie. Ainsi, si nous passons le début de matinée à faire beaucoup de choix, même simples, notre fin de matinée risque d'être désastreuse : notre cerveau fatigué nous poussera à prendre des décisions qui privilégient la simplicité ou le court terme. Les auteurs conseillent donc une grande vigilance : si nous observons des signaux de baisse de volonté, c'est le moment de s'abstenir de prendre des décisions cruciales ! Si notre stock de volonté est limité, il peut néanmoins être entraîné et développé, à la manière d'un muscle. Par de petits exercices quotidiens, chacun peut augmenter son niveau de volonté et ainsi sa capacité d'atteindre ses objectifs Mais c'est aussi sur la notion d'objectifs qu'il est utile de travailler. Presque toujours trop ambitieux, ceux-ci tiennent rarement compte des limites de notre volonté. Il faudrait ainsi s'astreindre à ne passer à un deuxième objectif que lorsque le premier a été atteint, pour ne pas disperser son précieux stock de volonté. De même, un suivi régulier, voire quotidien, de ces objectifs est essentiel pour réguler les dérapages qui ne manqueront pas de se produire. Ce suivi est d'autant plus efficace lorsqu'il est partagé avec des proches : un engagement oral et public a plus de poids qu'une résolution prise uniquement avec soi-même. Un livre émaillé de recommandations souvent de bon sens, parfois contre-intuitives, toujours validées par des expériences. A recommander tant à titre personnel que professionnel.
